Suzanne A. (Gilbert) McAssey, 79, of North Smithfield and formerly of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the St. Antoine Residence, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late James T. McAssey Jr., with whom she shared a beautiful life filled with love and laughter.
Born in Woonsocket, Suzanne was the cherished daughter of the late Aldor and Cecile (Riquier) Gilbert. After dedicating 15 years to being a stay-at-home mom and wife, she joined the workforce as a custodian for the Woonsocket School System, where she served for over twenty years. Her commitment to her work was matched only by her dedication to her family, and she was known for her warm spirit and unwavering support.
Suzanne's seven grandchildren were her greatest joy and inspiration. Their laughter and love brought a radiant smile to her face, and she treasured every moment spent with them. She had a profound passion for the beach, a love that began in her youth during summers in East Matunuck. This tradition continued as her family grew, leading to countless cherished memories filled with swimming, quahogging, and soaking in the sun.
A lover of old movies and a talented cook, Suzanne was particularly known for her famous Ice Cream Sandwich Cake, which became a beloved family staple. Her kitchen was a gathering place where family and friends came together, creating lasting memories over shared meals and laughter.
Suzanne was not only beautiful on the outside but also had a heart of gold. Her deep love for her Catholic faith, family, and everyone she encountered was evident and inspiring to all who knew her. She embodied kindness and compassion, leaving a lasting impression on the lives she touched.
She is survived by her children: Patrick McAssey and his wife Kimberly of Smithfield, John McAssey of Martinez, CA, Sharon Savoie and her husband Gerry of North Smithfield, and Stephanie McAssey of Woonsocket. Suzanne also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Shawn, Jenna, Cole, Tyler, and Lauren McAssey, and James and Grace Savoie. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Bruce Gilbert.
Her funeral with a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM in St. Philip’s Church in Smithfield. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Fournier & Fournier Funeral Home, 463 South Main St, Woonsocket.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, (www.myeloma.org) in her memory. Suzanne's legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
